Haygarth grew up as the son of Renée Schuurman , five-time winner of a Grand Slam double title and a mixed title, in a tennis-loving family. He took part in the junior tournaments of Wimbledon and the French Open in 1985, but lost each his first encounter. Between 1986 and 1987 he studied at Texas A&M University , which his brother Kirk and sister Derryn also attended.
In 1988 he became a tennis professional and in the same year he reached the final of a tournament of the ATP Challenger Tour for the first time . He won his first Challenger double title two years later. In 1992 he was in a double final of the ATP World Tour for the first time at the tournament in Florence . In his career, he won six double titles on the ATP World Tour with changing partners, and he was also in a final five more times. He achieved his highest world rankings in 1999 with 40th place in doubles and in 1990 with 384th position in singles.
In the individual, he could never qualify for a Grand Slam tournament. In doubles he reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in 1994 and the quarter-finals of the US Open in 1999 . He was also in the round of 16 of the mixed competition at Wimbledon in 1995.
Haygarth has been married since 1991 and has two sons.
