Illja Martschenko ( Ukrainian Илья Марченко , English transcription: Illya Marchenko ; born September 8, 1987 in Dniprodzerzhynsk , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Ukrainian tennis player .
life and career
Illja Martschenko started playing tennis at the age of seven. His older brother Ihor Martschenko is a former figure skater who finished 11th at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano with his partner Evgenia Filonenko.
Martschenko played future tournaments from 2005, and in 2006 he won his first title at such a tournament. The first victories in Challenger tournaments followed. The year 2007 passed without any major highlights, in 2008 Martschenko reached the final of a Challenger tournament in Buxoro for the first time, in which he was defeated by local hero Denis Istomin in three sets. In September 2008 he played for the Ukrainian Davis Cup team for the first time and contributed to a 5-0 win over João Sousa .
In January 2009, Martschenko played his first qualification for a Grand Slam tournament at the Australian Open , he failed in the first qualifying round. A month later he was able to qualify for an ATP tournament for the first time in Marseille , but lost to Mischa Zverev in the first round . In July 2009 Martschenko reached his second Challenger final in Penza and a month later he won his first title in Istanbul with a final victory over Florian Mayer . Thanks to these two successes, he improved into the top 200 of the ATP world rankings . At the US Open in 2009 he reached the third qualifying round, in which he was defeated by Marco Chiudinelli . In October 2009 he had his greatest success to date at an ATP tournament; in Moscow he survived the qualification and then reached after victories over Denis Istomin , Andrei Golubew and Yevgeny Koroljow the semi-finals, in which he was subject to Janko Tipsarević . A month later he reached another Challenger final in Astana and finished the year in world number 120.
The year 2010 started successfully. At the Australian Open , Martschenko was able to qualify for the main draw and defeated former world number one Carlos Moyá in the first round before he was eliminated without a chance against Nikolai Dawydenko , who was sixth . In February 2010, he reached the quarter-finals at the ATP tournaments in Zagreb and Marseille and then entered the top 100 in the world rankings. In March 2010, he was able to defeat a top 50 player for the first time in the first round of the Masters tournament in Miami with Paul-Henri Mathieu . After a first round defeat at the French Open , Martschenko reached a quarter-finals again at the Eastbourne lawn tournament in June 2010 . At Wimbledon he made it to the second round, but had to cancel his match due to a shoulder injury against Gilles Simon . During the following American hard court season he was in the third round at the tournaments in Washington and New Haven in August 2010 . At the US Open , he failed in round one to Marin Čilić, who was 11th . After further first round defeats, Marchenko fell back to 99th place in the world rankings, but was then able to reach an ATP semi-finals for the second time in his career in St. Petersburg at the end of October . He lost this against the eventual tournament winner Mikhail Kukuschkin .
In early 2011 he reached the second round in Doha . At the Australian Open , too , by defeating Rubén Ramírez Hidalgo, as in the previous year, he made it into the second round, in which he had no chance against the later finalist Andy Murray , who was fifth . At the following tournament in Zagreb , Martschenko was eliminated from the eventual tournament winner Ivan Dodig in the second round.
