Evgeni Evgenjewitsch Koroljow ( Russian Евгений Евгеньевич Королёв , scientific transliteration: Evgeny Korolev , born February 14, 1988 in Moscow , Soviet Union ) is a former Russian - Kazakh tennis player . He is a cousin of the former Russian tennis player Anna Kurnikowa .

Career

Yevgeny Korolev was born in Moscow , where he started playing tennis with his father at the age of four. He played ice hockey and is still his coach today . Although Koroljow never played in the juniors, he got his first ATP points at three Challenger tournaments in Germany at the age of 15 . His older brother Alexey supports him with business matters and is also his physiotherapist . In addition to Russian , he also speaks German and English , which he already practiced with a private tutor at the age of seven.

Koroljow won his first individual title on the Challenger Tour in Aachen in 2005 , followed by the title in Düsseldorf the following year . In 2006 he secured his first double title in Grenoble with Teimuras Gabashvili . In the two seasons out Korolyov succeeded each tournament win in Aachen, before 2009 not only in Szczecin his fifth single and in Mons with Denis Istomin won his second doubles title at Challenger level, but in Delray Beach for the first time in a final of the World Tour stood. In this Koroljow, who only moved into the main field after successful qualification, lost to Mardy Fish with 5: 7 and 3: 6. His last title win was in 2013 at the Challenger tournament in Marburg with victory in the doubles competition. His partner this time was Andrei Golubev . In Grand Slam tournaments, he only made it past the second round in singles at the Australian Open in 2010 , but then failed in round three. In doubles he was eliminated three times in the first and twice in the second round in a total of five Grand Slam participations. He achieved his highest placements in the world rankings in the 2010 season with 46th place in singles and 113th place in doubles.

Between 2011 and 2015 Korolev played a total of nine matches for the Kazakh Davis Cup team . He won one of his five singles games while he lost all of his four doubles. Before 2011 he was and from 2016 he is again listed as a Russian by the ATP .

After persistent injury problems, he announced his resignation in November 2014, but since then he has occasionally competed in tournaments, mostly challengers.
