Andrei Alexandrowitsch Golubew ( Russian Андрей Александрович Голубев , English transcription: Andrey Golubev ; born July 22, 1987 in Wolschski , Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic , Soviet Union ) is a Kazakh tennis player of Russian origin.

Career

Until 2006: Career and first successes as a junior and at future tournaments

Andrei Golubew started playing tennis at the age of six. At the age of 15, on the recommendation of a friend, he moved to Italy to Bra , where he has lived since then and trained at Massimo Puci's matchball tennis academy . From 2003 he played in satellite and future tournaments, and in 2004 he reached a future final for the first time. He was also able to win a tournament on the junior tour in Salsomaggiore Terme , defeating Robin Haase in the final.

In 2005, Golubew won two future tournaments in Italy and thus achieved a position in the top 500 of the world rankings . In the following year he reached a total of six finals in future tournaments, of which he was able to win two in France and Spain.

2007: First Challenger final and ATP debut

In 2007 Andrei Golubew tried for the first time to qualify for ATP tournaments; he reached among other things the third qualifying round at Wimbledon . In addition, he now played more tournaments on the ATP Challenger Tour ; he was able to reach a final in Recanati for the first time in July 2007 , which he lost to Wang Yeu-tzuoo . Two weeks earlier he had already won his first double title in Mantua alongside Francesco Piccari . At the ATP tournament in Basel he was able to qualify for the main field and then won his first match at ATP level against Amer Delić . In the second round he was able to win the first set against Paul-Henri Mathieu , but then lost in three sets. Nevertheless, he finished a year in the top 200 of the world rankings for the first time.

2008–2009: Challenger title, Grand Slam debut, first ATP final and entry into the Top 100

The year 2008 began with a successful qualification in Adelaide , where he lost to Ernests Gulbis in the first round . The first Challenger title followed three weeks later in Heilbronn . After eliminating the top seeded Florian Mayer in the second round , Golubew benefited in the final from the abandonment of his opponent Philipp Petzschner . In the following months he tried again and again to qualify for ATP tournaments, but only made it into the main field in Toronto and Los Angeles , where he was eliminated in the first round. In August 2008, Andrei Golubew failed to qualify for the US Open in the third round to Stéphane Bohli , but nevertheless moved into the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time as a lucky loser . There he defeated Brendan Evans in the first round , but then lost to seventh placed David Nalbandian in the second round . Since he saw no chance for himself to be called up to the Russian Davis Cup team , Golubev had in summer 2008 (just like his compatriots Yuri Schchukin and Mikhail Kukushkin ) accepted the Kazakh citizenship, and so he was able to beat the Philippines compete for Kazakhstan for the first time. He won both singles and doubles effortlessly and thus contributed two points to the 5-0 victory. Since then, Golubew has a record of 12-2 wins in six Davis Cup games so far. In October 2008 the biggest success in Andrei Golubew's career followed: In Saint Petersburg he qualified for the main draw and, after victories over Olivier Rochus , Marat Safin , Mischa Zverev and Victor Hănescu, he reached the finals, where he, however, beat the top seed Andy Murray was clearly inferior. Two weeks later, Golubew won the Challenger tournament in Astana , defeating French Laurent Recouderc in the final . Then he entered the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time , and moved up to position 89 by the end of the year.

As a result, he was directly qualified at the Australian Open in 2009 , but lost in the first round to Fabio Fognini . Until May 2009 Golubew could only win a single match at ATP level, and therefore fell out of the top 100 again. Nevertheless, he moved into the main field as a replacement at the French Open 2009 , and met after a first round win over Denis Gremelmayr in the second round on the former world number one Lleyton Hewitt , to whom he was smoothly inferior. At Wimbledon , the first round opponent was Jo-Wilfried Tsonga , against whom he lost in four tight sets. In July 2009 Andrei Golubew reached the final of the Challenger tournament in Recanti , like two years earlier , but could not win the title there again against Stéphane Bohli . In addition, he was in the doubles competition together with Adriano Biasella in the final, but lost this too. At the Canada Masters in Montreal Golubew was able to defeat a player from the top 20 for the first time with Radek Štěpánek . In the second round he was eliminated by Stan Wawrinka , but in the following week he reached his best position in the world rankings with rank 56. In October 2009 Golubew lost in Saint Petersburg in the first round against Mikhail Juschny , and therefore lost the world ranking points collected here the year before. Even the successful Challenger title defense in Astana with a victory over Ilya Martschenko could not prevent Golubew from falling out of the top 100 again.

2010: First ATP title and entry into the top 50

At the beginning of 2010 , Andrei Golubew joined Yaroslawa Schwedowa at the Hopman Cup . He won two of three singles and one of two mixed doubles. For the Australian Open , Golubew received a wild card as the best-placed Asian player under 23 . After defeating Mardy Fish in four sets in the first round , he was eliminated in the second round against Ivan Ljubičić, who was placed in 24th position . Two weeks later Golubew reached the final at the Challenger tournament in Heilbronn , which he lost to Michael Berrer . The next few months were without any major success: Golubew was only able to reach the second round at the ATP tournaments in Casablanca and Monte Carlo . At the French Open and Wimbledon , he was eliminated in the first round. In July 2010, Andrei Golubew's career peaked so far: on his 23rd birthday at the German Open at Rothenbaum in Hamburg, after victories over Mischa Zverev and Marcel Granollers in the round of 16, he met the top seeded Nikolai Dawydenko . He defeated this as well as after Denis Istomin , Florian Mayer and Jürgen Melzer in the final in two sets, and thus won his only ATP title. In the world rankings, Golubew then jumped from 82nd place to 36th place. The following months passed without any major highlights; at the US Open Golubew was eliminated in the first round against the later semi-finalist Mikhail Juschny . Two weeks later he contributed two singles and one double victory to the 5-0 win over Switzerland in the Davis Cup. Kazakhstan made it into the world group for the first time. In October 2010 Golubew was able to reach an ATP final for the second time this season after victories in Kuala Lumpur , including over top seeded Robin Söderling and David Ferrer . There he lost again to his "feared opponent" Michail Juschny despite the 1-0 lead.

2011: series of defeats

The year 2011 began for Andrei Golubew at the Australian Open with a first round defeat against qualifier Grigor Dimitrov . After a rather disappointing start to the season, the first highlight of the season was the 3-2 win in the Davis Cup over the Czech Republic. Golubew contributed two individual victories, including over the top 10 player Tomáš Berdych . At the Masters tournament in Indian Wells in March 2011 Golubew lost after a first round victory over Florian Mayer in the second round against eventual tournament winner Novak Đoković . The win against Mayer was to remain his last at ATP level for a long time: By August 2011, Andrei Golubew lost 18 ATP matches in a row, including at the French Open , Wimbledon and Hamburg , where he won the title last year had won. As a result, he fell far behind in the world rankings and out of the top 100. Only at the Masters tournament in Cincinnati Golubew was able to stop the series of defeats with a victory over the 16th placed Stan Wawrinka .
