The Intersport Heilbronn Open was a men's tennis tournament on the ATP Challenger Tour . It took place annually from 1984 to 2014 in the Talheim tennis center in the Talheim industrial area Rauher Stich , about 6 km south of the city of Heilbronn in Baden-Württemberg . In 1988 it was included in the ATP tournament series . The initiator and director of the tournament was Ulrich Eimüllner . The annual event was at the end of January, at the same time as the second week of the Australian Open. 32 players took part in the first round, previously four players could qualify for the main field via qualification, who would not have been eligible to start due to their world ranking position; The organization team gave four players, mostly young German talents, so-called wild cards , which entitle them to participate in the first round without prior qualification. A total of three covered hard courts were available, the center court offered space for 1700 spectators. The winner recently received 110 world ranking points, the total prize money was 106,500 euros, and the players' accommodation was paid for.

Mostly young players who have a career ahead of them take part in challengers. Previous winners who became known later include Carl-Uwe Steeb , Michael Stich and Goran Ivanišević .

The tournament was part of the Tretorn Series + , Tretorn is the name of the game ball. In March 2014, Eimüllner announced his retirement as tournament director, which also means that the Heilbronn Open will be closed.
