Ģirts Dzelde (born July 16, 1963 in Riga ) is a former Latvian tennis player .

Life

Dzelde attended the University of Latvia and was double European amateur champion in 1980 and 1983. In 1988 he was in Sofia for the first time in the semi-finals of a Challenger tournament and the following year he stood at the side of Goran Prpić in the final of the Challenger tournament in Vienna . In 1994 he won the Heilbronn Challenger tournament with Mathias Huning . Although Dzelde was never able to win a tournament on the ATP World Tour , he was in three finals with changing partners. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1991 with position 273 in singles and in 1993 with position 108 in doubles.

In the individual, he could never qualify for a Grand Slam tournament. In the doubles competition, his best result was a third round participation in Wimbledon .

Dzelde completed 27 singles and 16 doubles games for the Latvian Davis Cup team between 1993 and 2000 . During this time, Latvia could never qualify for the world group, the highlights included encounters with the top players Younes El Aynaoui , Hicham Arazi and Goran Ivanišević , against which he was defeated.

After the end of his professional career, he became team manager of the Latvian Davis Cup team.
