De la Peña was the South American youth champion in four age categories. In 1983 he became a professional tennis player and two years later he won his first individual title on the ATP World Tour in Marbella . In 1987 he reached his first double-final on the ATP World Tour alongside Jay Berger , but there they were defeated by Tomás Carbonell and Sergio Casal . He won his first double title the following year with Sergi Bruguera in Florence . In total, he was able to win four singles and six doubles titles in the course of his career. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1987 with position 31 in singles and in 1991 with position 53 in doubles.
His best individual result in a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the round of 16 at the French Open . In the doubles competition he never got beyond the second round, for the doubles at Wimbledon he could never qualify.
De la Peña played ten singles and two doubles games for the Argentine Davis Cup team between 1986 and 1993 , his individual record was five wins and three defeats, he was able to win both doubles games.
After retiring from professional sport, he worked as a tennis trainer; Fernando González and Guillermo Coria were among his protégés .
