Diego Pérez (born February 9, 1962 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan tennis player .

Life

Pérez, who already won the silver medal at the South American Games 1978 both in singles and alongside Pablo Stapff in doubles, took part in the junior tournament of the French Open in 1980 and reached the semi-finals there. He was finally defeated in three sets against Henri Leconte . In 1982 and 1983 he was the national tennis champion of Uruguay. He won his first tournament victory in 1981 on the side of José Luis Damiani in Palermo . It would be over a decade before he could win another double title on the ATP World Tour . After several semi-finals in singles between 1982 and 1984, he celebrated his first and only individual title in 1985 in Bordeaux . In the following years he could no longer build on his earlier successes individually; Instead, he achieved good results in doubles, so he stood in eight finals between 1985 and 1989 with changing partners, but without being able to win a title. It was not until 1991, ten years after his first double title, that he won the Challenger tournament in Cervia alongside Christian Miniussi . In 1992 and 1993 Pérez won two more double titles on the ATP World Tour. He also celebrated three double titles on the ATP Challenger Tour between 1991 and 1995. He reached the highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1984 with position 27 in singles and 1987 with position 37 in doubles.

His best individual result in a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the second round of the French Open in 1992. In the doubles competition, he reached the third round at the US Open and the French Open, and in 1990 he was in the second round of the mixed competition.

Pérez played continuously for the Uruguayan Davis Cup team between 1979 and 1995 . He completed 54 singles and 29 doubles games. With the team he was three times in the first round of the world group. The first two encounters against Mexico and the Netherlands were both clearly lost. In 1994 Uruguay was only just defeated 3-2 by Austria . Pérez lost the opening game against Thomas Muster , then won the doubles alongside Marcelo Filippini and his second single against Gilbert Schaller . While his individual balance was positive with 31:23, he was significantly less effective in doubles with 8:21.

In addition, Pérez took part in the Pan American Games in 1995 in Mar del Plata and won the silver medal there.
