Younes El Aynaoui ( Arabic يونس العيناوي, DMG Yūnis al-ʿAināwī ; * September 12, 1971 in Rabat ) is a former Moroccan tennis player .

Career

He won five ATP tournaments in his career: 1999 in Amsterdam , 2001 in Bucharest and 2002 in Casablanca , Doha and Munich . In 11 other tournaments he reached the final. His greatest successes in Grand Slam tournaments were at the Australian Open and the US Open , where he made it into the quarter-finals twice.

In 2003 El Aynaoui lost in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in a close five set match to Andy Roddick with 19:21 in the last set. It was the longest decisive set in the history of the Grand Slam tournaments until the first-round encounter between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut at Wimbledon in 2010.

On December 3, 2005, El Aynaoui tested positive for cannabis at a tournament in Italy . From 2006 he played in the German Bundesliga for the Erfurt TC Rot-Weiß .

El Aynaoui, one of the most popular people in the country, was honored with the highest honors by the King of Morocco .
