Fabrice Santoro (born December 9, 1972 in Tahiti , French Polynesia ) is a retired French tennis player .
Career
Santoro was and is active for the Rochusclub Düsseldorf in the German tennis Bundesliga .
In his career he won six individual ATP tournaments: 1997 in Lyon , 1999 in Marseille , 2000 in Doha , 2002 in Dubai and 2007 and 2008 in Newport , in six other tournaments he reached the final.
Santoro was more successful in doubles; he won a total of 24 titles and was in the finals of 18 other tournaments. Among other things, he won the double competition at the Australian Open in 2003 and 2004 alongside his compatriot Michaël Llodra .
Santoro set a record in the history of Grand Slam tournaments at the French Open in 2004 together with his compatriot Arnaud Clément ; the match, which Santoro won 6: 4, 6: 3, 6: 7, 5 , 3: 6 and 16:14, lasted - spread over two days (24/25 May) - a total of 6 hours and 33 Minutes. This record was beaten in 2010 at Wimbledon with the first round match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut .
At the Australian Open in 2006, Santoro only failed in the quarterfinals to David Nalbandian . At the US Open he drew level with Andre Agassi in 2007 with his 61st participation in a Grand Slam tournament . Santoro surpassed this record at the Australian Open in 2008 , and his record of 70 starts in Grand Slam tournaments was exceeded by Roger Federer at the 2017 US Open . Another statistic says that in his long career he has defeated a player 19 times who was previously world number one. Santoro was also the first player to top the Champions Race ranking (after winning the tournament in Doha in January 2000).
After his first round at the Australian Open against Marin Čilić , Fabrice Santoro ended his professional career in January 2010.
Peculiarity of his game
What was striking about Santoro's style of play was that he played forehand and backhand with both hands, which is extremely rare in men's tennis. As a right-hander, he can also play with the left. If he can no longer reach a ball with his right backhand, he simply plays a forehand with his left hand. He was one of the fastest players on the tour and could vary well. He liked to take the pace out of the game and wait for an opponent to make a mistake. It was also remarkable that he also played his volleyball game with both hands. He was also called the magician, the "Magician des Courts".
