Career

Benneteau began playing tennis at the age of four and was a professional from 2000. In 2004 he made it into the top 100 of the ATP world rankings for the first time . He won his first ATP title in 2003 with his compatriot Nicolas Mahut at the tournament in Metz . In Lyon he secured his second ATP tournament victory in 2006 with Arnaud Clément . His greatest success in singles was the move into the quarter-finals of the French Open in 2006, which he lost 2: 6, 2: 6, 3: 6 against the Croatian Ivan Ljubičić . On the way there he beat the seeded players Radek Štěpánek and Marcos Baghdatis , among others . On November 11, 2009 Benneteau defeated the then world number one Roger Federer in Paris-Bercy in three sets. Benneteau could not win a single tournament despite ten finals.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , he competed in singles and doubles. After an opening win over Michail Juschny, he was defeated by Roger Federer 2: 6, 2: 6 in the second round. The doubles were more successful, together with Richard Gasquet he won the bronze medal. They first defeated the British Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins , the seventh seeded Indians Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna and the third-placed Serbs Janko Tipsarević and Nenad Zimonjić . In the semifinals they had to admit defeat to Bob and Mike Bryan from the USA before defeating the Spaniards Feliciano López and David Ferrer in straight sets in the bronze medal match.

He won his only Grand Slam title in 2014 with his compatriot Édouard Roger-Vasselin at the French Open in men's doubles. After retiring from the 2018 US Open , he ended his career on the World Tour.

Benneteau played for the French Davis Cup team from 2010 to 2018 . In 14 matches he won three of his seven singles games and eight of his twelve games in doubles. In 2017 he won the Davis Cup with France and played in the doubles game in the semi-finals during the season.
