Olivier Patience (born March 25, 1980 in Évreux ) is a former French tennis player .
Career
Olivier Patience started playing tennis at the age of four and played his first professional tournaments on the ITF Future Tour at the age of 18 . In the following year he was able to win two single and two double titles on the Future Tour. He appeared regularly on the ATP Challenger Tour from the 2000 season and this year reached a final in both singles and doubles. With his Grand Slam debut at the French Open , he scored his first victory. Together with Jean-René Lisnard they prevailed against the seeded duo Justin Gimelstob and Mark Knowles before they were eliminated in the second round.
In 2002 he qualified for the individual field of the Australian Open and met the Hungarian Attila Sávolt in the first round , to whom he was defeated in five sets. In May of the same year he won his first challenger title in Prague as a qualifier . On his way to the final, he beat Tomáš Berdych , among others, and defeated Todd Larkham in three sets in the final . At the French Open he received a wildcard for the doubles with Julien Varlet , where they lost their first round match against Bob and Mike Bryan . His appearance in Chennai also ended with a first round defeat. The following year Patience won his second individual title on the Challenger Tour. In Manerbio he prevailed in the final in three sets against Martín Vassallo Argüello . At the end of the year he was ranked 223 in the world .
After the year 2003 went quite well for the French with the renewed Challenger tournament victory in Manerbio and place 165 at the end of the year, the year 2004 also began quite successfully for Patience at the Australian Open . After qualifying, he met Igor Andrejew in the first round , against whom he was able to turn a two-set deficit and won in five sets. With a win against Nikolai Dawydenko , he moved into the third round, which he lost to James Blake . He made it to the third round in Estoril , Barcelona and London . At the French Open he won his opening match, but lost his second round encounter against the lucky loser Lee Hyung-taik . Due to these successes, he achieved his best position in the world rankings in June with the 87th place. The only time in his career he was in the main draw of all Grand Slam tournaments this year. In the second half of the year, Patience did not get past the second round on the ATP Tour, and at Challenger level he only reached a quarter-finals.
The following year Patience won two singles and one double on the Challenger Tour. In the individual, he prevailed in Saint-Brieuc against Victor Ioniță and in Rome against Florent Serra . He celebrated his only double title together with Nicolas Devilder in Monza . It was less successful for him on the ATP Tour, he never got past the second round in any tournament. At the end of the year, Patience made it into a challenger final for the third time this year. In Doha he played against his compatriot Julien Benneteau on New Year's Day and won in three sets. This victory marked the beginning of his most successful year at Challenger level, with three more titles to celebrate (in Sanremo , Lugano and Reggio nell'Emilia ). He also won again on the ATP Tour, so he was able to advance to the semi-finals in Costa do Sauípe , which he lost to Alberto Martín . After that, however, it only set first round defeats in both Grand Slams and ATP Tour tournaments, so that he fell out of the top 100 at the end of the year.
After another first round defeat at the Australian Open at the beginning of 2007, Patience managed a little surprise by moving into the third round of the French Open , where he could start with a wildcard. There he failed in five tight sentences to Novak Đoković . Shortly afterwards, he defended his title in Reggio nell'Emilia on the Challenger Tour and celebrated his tenth Challenger title. After further defeats in the first and second round, Patience succeeded in Brașov at the end of the year again in a Challenger finals, which he lost. The year 2008 began for him with further early losses in tournaments. Only at the Challenger level did he achieve more than one win in a row in the main draw of a tournament. This resulted in Patience almost falling out of the top 200 in the world. Only with his last title win on the Challenger Tour in Cherkassy was he able to stop relegation and finished the year in 141st place.
In the following years Patience could not celebrate any more successes. On the ATP World Tour in 2009 in Acapulco and Indian Wells he was in the main field of the individual, but lost his opening game. Even on the Challenger Tour, he couldn't get past the semi-finals. This led to Patience falling out of the top 200 in the world and having to play tournaments on the Future Tour again from the 2010 season. He still managed to qualify for the French Open and in Umag , but he could not win a main round match. The following year he received a wildcard for the double competition with Nicolas Devilder for the French Open , but failed again in the first round. Patience played his last tournament in August 2012 on the Future Tour, on which he won six singles and six doubles titles in the course of his career.
Patience played in the tennis Bundesliga for Halle , Nuremberg and Reutlingen , and in the 2nd tennis Bundesliga for Espelkamp-Mittwald .
