Lee Hyung-taik (born January 3, 1976 in Hoengseong ) is a retired South Korean tennis player .

Career

Lee was born in a small potato-growing village in Gangwon-do Province . He started playing tennis at the age of nine. In 1995 he joined professional tennis.

He first attracted attention in 2000 when he advanced to the fourth round of the US Open and only lost to the American Pete Sampras there . In 2003, Lee became the first Korean ever to win an ATP tournament. At Adidas International in Sydney he defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero as a qualifier in the final . In the same year he won the double tournament of the Siebel Open in San José together with the Belarusian Uladsimir Waltschkou .
