Denis Olegowitsch Istomin ( Russian Денис Олегович Истомин ; Uzbek Denis Istomin ; born September 7, 1986 in Orenburg , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ) is an Uzbek tennis player .
life and career
His parents, Oleg, a Uzbek, and Klawdija moved with him to Tashkent three months after he was born , where he grew up with a brother. He started playing tennis when he was five. His mother is a tennis trainer. He was sidelined for two years due to a car accident in 2001. At first, his doctors said he would never be able to hold a tennis racket again, but in April 2003 he started training again.
In 2006, Istomin received a wildcard for the Australian Open , but was eliminated in the first round against the eventual tournament winner Roger Federer , who was then number 1 in the world rankings. In 2008 he reached the second round of the same tournament, in which he lost to Lleyton Hewitt .
In 2012 he took part in the Olympic Games , where he reached the round of 16 in the individual competition. There he again lost to Roger Federer in two sentences.
In 2017 at the Australian Open in the second round, he surprisingly beat the number two seeded Novak Đoković in five sets. In the third round he also defeated Pablo Carreño Busta , but then failed in the second round to Grigor Dimitrov .
In 2018 he won the gold medal in singles at the Asian Games.
