The men's tennis singles for the 2012 Summer Olympics took place from July 28th to August 5th on the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon . The defending champion was the Spaniard Rafael Nadal , who was unable to defend his title due to an injury. A total of 64 players from 34 countries took part in this tournament.

Up to the semi-finals, the tournament ran almost without any major surprises apart from the victory of the Japanese Kei Nishikori over the fourth-placed Spaniard David Ferrer in the round of 16. In the semifinals Andy Murray defeated the favored Novak Đoković , while Roger Federer was only able to prevail after four hours and 26 minutes against the Argentine Juan Martín del Potro in the decisive third set with 19:17. In the bronze match, del Potro won in straight sets against Đoković, becoming the first male tennis player in his country to win an Olympic medal. In the final, Murray retaliated for his defeat in the final at the Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament shortly before : Without losing a set, he defeated the Swiss Federer and secured the gold medal, Federer received silver.
