From 2001 to 2011 the tournament was held in Costa do Sauípe , 1,849 km away . In the individual, Nicolás Almagro defended his title and was able to successfully defend his title by beating Filippo Volandri in the final . This was his third title win at the Brasil Open after 2008 and 2011 and his eleventh ATP title overall. Last year's winners in doubles, Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares , played with new partners this year. They met in the quarterfinals and Soares and Eric Butorac were able to prevail. They then moved into the final, which they won in three sets against Michal Mertiňák and André Sá . This was their first joint title; Soares had previously won five ATP titles with other partners, Butorac had already won twelve.
The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 28 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 16 pairs. The four top seeded players in the singles each got a bye into the second round.
The qualification took place from February 11th to 13th, 2012. Four qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament.
