The BB&T Atlanta Open 2012 was a tennis tournament that took place in Atlanta from July 16-22, 2012 . It was part of the ATP World Tour 2012 and was played on hard court. In the same week were in Hamburg the Bet-at-home Open German Tennis Championships and in Gstaad , the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad played. Like the tournament in Gstaad, the tournament was part of the ATP World Tour 250 category . In contrast, the tournament in Hamburg was part of the ATP World Tour 500 category .

Defending champion in the singles was Mardy Fish , who had to give up injured with his opening player this year. In the final, Luxembourg Gilles Müller , who was in his first ATP final since 2005, and Andy Roddick faced each other. Roddick secured his 32nd ATP title with a win over three sets, while Müller is still waiting for his first tournament victory. Alex Bogomolov junior and Matthew Ebden competed in doubles to defend their title, but with different partners. Bogolomov reached the quarter-finals this year, but could not contest it due to injury. Ebden, on the other hand, managed to defend his title against Xavier Malisse and Michael Craig Russell with his new partner Ryan Harrison due to a narrow victory over three sets . It was their second joint title and the first this season.

The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 28 players, that of the double competition consisted of 16 pairs. The four top seeded players in the singles each received a bye in the first round.
