Colin Fleming (born August 13, 1984 in Linlithgow ) is a former British tennis player from Scotland . His successes he celebrated primarily in the double, with the finals in the Masters Finals of Montreal in 2013 represents his greatest success. He has been the captain of the British Fed Cup team since 2019 .
Career
Beginnings (2004-2008)
Fleming began playing tennis professionally in 2004 and was able to win some future tournaments together with his then doubles partner Jamie Murray , brother of top 10 player Andy Murray . In the summer of 2006 he was finally among the top 200 in the ATP ranking.
In order to complete his studies in business administration at the University of Stirling , Fleming interrupted his professional tennis career in 2006 and 2007.
In 2008, Fleming came back better than before and managed to win six future doubles in a row. Within three months, he made the jump from 1230th to 422nd place.
Establishment in the top 100 of the double world rankings (2009–2012)
After winning some future tournaments with his new standard doubles partner Ken Skupski in early 2009, he also took part on the ATP Challenger Tour . At his first attempt he was able to reach the final in Jersey and two months later he won the Challenger doubles tournament in Cremona . On his first attempt after his comeback at an ATP tournament at the Queen's Club in London , Skupsi and Fleming were able to beat the top seeded pair Bob and Mike Bryan in straight sets; they then lost in the quarterfinals in just three sets against Łukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach . With the victory at the ATP tournament in Metz , Fleming made it into the top 100 of the ATP world rankings . At the beginning of November 2009, the pairing was also able to win the tournament in Saint Petersburg .
2010 was less successful on the ATP Tour, but he was able to win three Challenger tournaments and reached the final in Eastbourne . He also won the mixed at the Commonwealth Games together with Jocelyn Rae . When the results didn't get better, the duo Fleming and Skupski decided to split up in October 2010. With his new partners Ross Hutchins and again Jamie Murray, he achieved two more Challenger double titles by the end of the year.
In 2011, Fleming was only able to build on old successes with Igor Zelenay by taking part in the finals in Casablanca . With his now permanent doubles partner Hutchins he won two Challenger tournaments and they reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and at the US Open . In November they were able to repeat their 2009 success at the tournament in St. Petersburg .
In the 2012 season he continued to play with Hutchins and was able to celebrate his greatest success at the tournament with the first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open , by making it to the round of 16. The two British won two more titles in Delray Beach and Eastbourne . Later in the year, Fleming and Hutchins also reached the finals in Newport and at the Malaysian Open . They also achieved great success with their participation in the semi-finals at the Masters tournament in Shanghai and the round of 16 at the US Open .
Best tournament year and retirement (2013-2017)
At the second tournament in 2013 in Auckland , Fleming achieved the sixth tournament success of his career with his temporary partner Bruno Soares , against whom he had lost in the final at the 2012 Malaysian Open . In the same year he succeeded in winning the title in Marseille with Rohan Bopanna . The year was Fleming's best year, he achieved his personal highest ranking of 13th place in September and finished in 27th place, as in the previous year. In 2015, Jonathan Erlich was his eighth and final tournament victory in Shenzhen .
In January 2017, Fleming retired as a player to become the new national coach for Tennis Scotland . He is married and has two children.
