Linlithgow ( [lɪnˈlɪθɡoʊ] ; Scottish Gaelic Gleann Iucha , Scots Lithgae ) is the former capital of the Scottish county named after her, Linlithgowshire , whose official name is West Lothian . The city has 16,470 inhabitants.
Linlithgow as the residence of Scottish kings
Linlithgow is considered the Versailles of the Kings of Scotland due to Linlithgow Palace , a castle where Mary Queen of Scots was born. It is located in the interior of the county by a small lake and has a town house built in 1618 .
Linlithgow is literarily known for Friedrich Schiller's drama Maria Stuart and Theodor Fontane's ballad Archibald Douglas :
"Better think back to Linlithgow, the lake and the Vogelherd, where I happily fish and hunt you and taught you to swim and jump."
