George Horsburgh "Dod" Allan (born April 23, 1875 in Linlithgow Bridge , † October 17, 1899 in Earlsferry ) was a Scottish football player . He was a striker and played in the late 19th century, including for English club Liverpool .

Life

Born in Linlithgow in West Lothian in 1875 , Allan played for several Scottish amateur clubs at the beginning of his career. In 1894 he came to the Scottish first division club Leith Athletic , with whom he was relegated from the First Division in 1895, before he was committed in September 1895 by John McKenna and WE Barclay for the English club Liverpool FC , which was playing in the Second Division at the time. In his first season at Anfield , Allan scored 25 goals in just 20 games, helping Liverpool advance to the First Division . Although he was unable to maintain this level in the following first division seasons, two years later he had 49 goals in 79 league games and another three goals in the FA Cup and six in the so-called test matches, which correspond to today's relegation .

In 1897 Allan moved to Celtic Glasgow , with whom he won the Scottish Championship the following season . He himself contributed to this success with 15 goals in 17 games. In April 1898 he moved back to Liverpool.

Allan played his only international match for Scotland on April 3, 1897 in a 2-1 win over England in London .

Allan was still under contract with Liverpool when he died of tuberculosis on October 17, 1899, at the age of 24 . At the following home game, the Liverpool players wore black bracelets in his honor.
