Defending champion in the singles was Rafael Nadal , who no longer took part in the tournament this year. In this year's final, top seeded local hero Andy Murray won against number six seeded American James Blake in two sets with 7: 5 and 6: 4. This was Murray's fourth tournament win this year and his twelfth overall on the professional tour. In doubles, Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjić competed as the top-ranked duo to defend their title. After a bye in the first round, they were eliminated in the second round. In the final, the duo of Wesley Moodie and Michail Juschny won against the Brazilian dup Marcelo Melo and André Sá in three sets with 6: 4, 4: 6, [10: 6].
The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 56 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 24 pairs. The eight top seeded players in singles or pairings in doubles each got a bye into the second round. The total prize money was 663,750 euros; the total financial liabilities were 750,000 euros.
The qualification took place from June 6th to 8th, 2009. Four qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament. There was also a lucky loser.
The following prize money and world ranking points were paid out or credited for reaching the respective round. Players who moved into the main draw via qualification received the specified qualification points in addition to those for reaching the respective round.
