The Rakuten Japan Open Championships 2009 was a tennis tournament that took place from October 5th to 11th, 2009 in Tokyo . It was part of the ATP World Tour 2009 and was played outdoors on hard courts. In the same week, the China Open took place in Beijing , which, like the Rakuten Japan Open Championships, belonged to the ATP World Tour 500 category .

Defending champion in the singles was Tomáš Berdych , who was eliminated in the quarterfinals. This year's final was played by Michail Juschny and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga . Tsonga won in two sets 6: 3 and 6: 3, claiming the third title of the current year and his fifth overall. In doubles, Juschny and Mischa Zverev no longer competed together to defend their title. In the final, the Austrian duo Julian Knowle and Jürgen Melzer prevailed in three sets with 6: 2, 5: 7, [10: 8] against Ross Hutchins and Jordan Kerr .

The field of participants in the individual competition consisted of 32 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 16 pairs. The total prize money was $ 1,100,000; total financial liabilities were $ 1,226,500.
