The Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships 2011 were a tennis tournament that took place from October 3rd to 9th, 2011 in Tokyo . It was part of the 2011 ATP World Tour and was played outdoors on hard courts. The same week the China Open was played in Beijing , which, like the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships, belonged to the ATP World Tour 500 category .

Defending champion in singles was Rafael Nadal . In this year's final he lost to Andy Murray in three sets . This was his fourth ATP title that year and the twentieth of his career overall. Eric Butorac and Jean-Julien Rojer defended their title in doubles, but were eliminated in the quarterfinals. After his triumph in singles, Murray was then able to win the double finals together with his brother Jamie , where they defeated František Čermák and Filip Polášek in straight sets. For the brothers it was the second common title; the last one was around a year ago. Jamie had already won another title this year with another partner.

The field of participants in the individual competition consisted of 32 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 16 pairs. The total prize pool was $ 1,214,500; total financial liabilities were $ 1,341,000.
