The AIG Japan Open Tennis Championships 2008 was a tennis tournament that took place from September 29th to October 5th, 2008 in Tokyo . It was part of the ATP Tour 2008 and was played outdoors on hard courts. In the same week, the Open de Moselle , which belonged to the International Series category , was played in Metz , while the tournament in Tokyo belonged to the higher endowed International Series Gold category .

David Ferrer was the defending champion in the singles, this year failed in the quarterfinals at the later finalist Juan Martín del Potro . This was defeated in the final by the seeding list ninth Tomáš Berdych in two sets with 1: 6, 4: 6. Jordan Kerr and Robert Lindstedt were successful in doubles last year. They were eliminated in the semifinals this year. The final decided the duo Michail Juschny and Mischa Zverev against Lukáš Dlouhý and Leander Paes 6: 3, 6: 4 for themselves.

The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 48 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 16 pairs. The 16 top seeded players in the singles each got a bye into the second round. The total prize pool was $ 769,000; total financial liabilities were $ 869,000.

The qualification took place from October 27th to 28th, 2008. Six qualifying places that entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament were played out. There was also a lucky loser.
