The 2016 Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships was a tennis tournament that took place in Tokyo from October 3-9, 2016 . It was part of the ATP World Tour 2016 and was played outdoors on hard courts. The same week the China Open was played in Beijing , which, like the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships, belonged to the ATP World Tour 500 category .

The defending champions were Stan Wawrinka in singles and in doubles the duo Raven Klaasen and Marcelo Melo .

The field of participants in the individual competition consisted of 32 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 16 pairs.

qualification

The qualification took place on October 1st and 2nd, 2016. Four qualifying places in the individual competition and one place in the doubles competition were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament.
