Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi ( Urdu اعصام الحق قریشی; * March 17, 1980 in Lahore ) is a Pakistani tennis player .

life and career

Early years

Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi did not start playing tennis until he was twelve, after cricket and swimming had previously been his favorite sports. His first coach was his mother Nosheen Ihtsham, former Pakistani number 1 tennis player. Between 1996 and 1998 he was able to win several tournaments on the junior tour and in July 1998 achieved his best place in the junior world rankings with 7th place. In October 1998 he defeated the then sixteen-year-old Andy Roddick at the World Super Junior Championships .

As early as 1998 he decided to pursue a career as a professional tennis player and collected his first world ranking points at satellite and future tournaments. In September 1998 he played for the first time for the Pakistani Davis Cup team and was able to contribute a single and a double victory to the 3-2 victory over Thailand .

In October 1999, Qureshi won his first future title in Indonesia. After three more future finals at the end of the year, one of which he was able to win, he ended the year in 308th place in the tennis world rankings . He was also able to win three future tournaments with different partners in doubles this year. In the Davis Cup he was less successful that year and could not prevent Pakistan's relegation to Asia Group II.

2000-2001

In 2000 Qureshi was able to reach the semi-finals of a Challenger tournament for the first time in Calcutta by defeating Leander Paes . He also reached two future finals this year and won a title. In doubles he won his first Challenger title in July 2000 at the side of Daniele Bracciali in Wrexham . In December 2000, title number 2 followed in Prague (with Kristian Pless ); before that, Qureshi had reached another Challenger final with various partners and won two future tournaments.

At the beginning of 2001, Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and his partner Vadim Kutsenko took part in the ATP tournament in Chennai and reached the second round there. As in the previous year, this year he won two double challenger titles in Buxoro and Bangkok . In the individual, his greatest successes were two future titles and a Challenger semifinal participation.

2002

After the last two Davis Cup seasons were not very successful for Pakistan, in 2002 they were promoted to Asia Group I through victories over Malaysia, Taiwan and China. Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi contributed a total of four single and three double victories, all with Aqeel Khan . In June 2002 Qureshi was able to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at Wimbledon . The special thing about it was that his partner Amir Hadad was an Israeli, i.e. came from a state that is not recognized by his home country Pakistan. He was therefore threatened by the Pakistani federation with expulsion from the Davis Cup team, which was prevented by the ITF . After a second round victory over Ellis Ferreira and Rick Leach , who were in 11th position , the Muslim-Jewish pairing could only be stopped in the round of 16. They then received a wildcard for the US Open and reached the second round there. In addition, at the end of the year they were awarded the “Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award” by the ATP, which aims to promote tolerance in tennis. Further highlights in 2002 were three consecutive double Challenger titles in July (in Bristol , Manchester and Hilversum ), each with different partners. As a result, Qureshi briefly entered the top 100 of the double world rankings.

2003-2004

At the beginning of 2003 Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi took part in some ATP tournaments together with Amir Hadad , but they were eliminated in the first round. After he had won a Future and a Challenger title in Fargʻona with Justin Bower in May 2003 , Qureshi was eliminated in the first round at both the French Open (with Daniel Vacek ) and Wimbledon (with Hadad). He then played for the first time together with Rohan Bopanna and was able to win another Challenger title in Denver . The partnership was initially ended after three tournaments, but should be continued successfully in later years. At the end of the year, Qureshi won two futures titles in doubles and three consecutive futures titles in singles (the first in two years).

The year 2004 began with two single future titles and a double challenger title in Salinas . In Nottingham , Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi was able to qualify for the main draw of an ATP tournament for the first time, but he lost in two tight sets against Jonas Björkman . A week later, the next Challenger title in doubles followed in Andorra , and he also reached two more Challenger finals this year. As in the previous year, he helped Pakistan stay in Asia Group I in the Davis Cup relegation game.

2005-2006

In 2005, the Pakistani Davis Cup team could even reach the play-off games for the world group after victories over Thailand and Taiwan. In both games, Qureshi won both singles and doubles with Aqeel Khan . In the final against Chile, however, Pakistan lost 5-0. At the Islamic Solidarity Games in Ta'if in April 2005 , Qureshi won the gold medal in singles, doubles and with the Pakistani team. This year Qureshi was able to reach four Challenger finals with various partners, one of which he won in Pamplona (with Lovro Zovko ). In singles, he lost ten Challenger first-round matches in a row between May 2005 and August 2005, but was able to close the year with a future title with a reasonably successful result.

2006 was the first year in seven years in which Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi could not win a single Challenger title. The only highlights of this year were the qualification for the singles main draw of the ATP tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch , where he lost in three extremely tight sets against the eventual tournament winner Mario Ančić , as well as one future title each in singles and doubles. In the Davis Cup , he could not prevent Pakistan's relegation to Asia Group II in the 5-0 defeat against China .

2007

After the previous year with few titles, the following one was all the more successful: From February 2007 to May 2007, Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi won a total of seven double future titles with various partners. In June 2007 Qureshi qualified for the main draw of the ATP tournament in Halle , where he sensationally won his first ATP match against Richard Gasquet, who was ranked eleventh in the world . In the second round he then lost to local hero Philipp Kohlschreiber . Two weeks later he qualified in Wimbledon for the first time for the singles main draw of a Grand Slam tournament and was able to win there against Lee Childs in three sets before he was eliminated in the second round against the former world number one Marat Safin . And Qureshi also qualified at the next lawn tournament in Newport and reached the quarter-finals of an ATP tournament there for the first time. He defeated, among other things, the Mardy Fish, who was in position 1 . In Newport, Qureshi and his partner Prakash Amritraj also received a wildcard for the double peloton, but they were eliminated in the first round. Thereupon Qureshi reunited with Rohan Bopanna , with whom he had already won a tournament in 2003. In July and August 2007 the "Indo-Pak-Express" won four Challenger tournaments in a row (in Manchester, Nottingham , Segovia and in the Bronx ). In addition, Qureshi was able to reach the singles final in Nottingham, where he lost to Alun Jones in three sets . In September 2007, Qureshi and Bopanna competed at the ATP tournament in Mumbai and made it to the finals, where they lost in two tight sets against Robert Lindstedt and Jarkko Nieminen . In October 2007 Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi won another Challenger title with Frederik Nielsen in Barnstaple , before he played again with Rohan Bopanna in November 2007 and reached the finals in Kuala Lumpur and New Delhi . In New Delhi, Qureshi was also able to win his first Challenger individual title by defeating An Jae-Sung . He ended the year in 125th place in the single and 90th place in the double world rankings, both of which were personal bests up to then.

2008

In January 2008, Qureshi reached the semifinals of the Chennai ATP tournament together with Marin Čilić . In the following months he was in the double main field at several ATP tournaments, mostly together with Rohan Bopanna . At the French Open they were eliminated in the first round against the brothers Bob and Mike Bryan , but were then able to win a Grand Slam match together for the first time at Wimbledon , and reached their second joint ATP final in Newport . During the rest of the season, Qureshi could not win a match at ATP level with various partners, but he won a total of three Challenger titles this season (in Dublin , Belo Horizonte and Toyota ). In the Davis Cup he managed with Pakistan, who had meanwhile been relegated to Asia Group III, with five 3-0 victories in one week, the return to Group II. The greatest successes in the individual this season were a first round win in Newport over Benjamin Becker and the successful qualification at the US Open , where he lost in four sets against former world number one Carlos Moyá .

2009

In 2009 Qureshi could not qualify for a single ATP tournament in singles, as he now increasingly focused on doubles. There he was all the more successful: He won four Challenger tournaments (in Kyoto , Khorat , Aachen and Helsinki ), the last three each with Rohan Bopanna . At Wimbledon he qualified together with Prakash Amritraj , and after two five-set wins he reached the second round for the second time since 2002. At the US Open , Jarkko Nieminen was his doubles partner, with whom he reached the second round. For the third time in a row he was able to finish a year in the top 100 of the double world rankings.

2010

After Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Rohan Bopanna were eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open in January 2010 , they won their first joint ATP title two weeks later in Johannesburg against Karol Beck and Harel Levy . In April 2010, the two only reached a Challenger final in Naples and a week later an ATP final in Casablanca . The next defeat in the final followed in Nice in May 2010 , followed by a second round at the French Open . In Wimbledon , the "Indo-Pak-Express" was able to reach the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, where they had to admit defeat to the eventual winners Jürgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner . They also drew attention to themselves with their “Stop War Start Tennis” campaign. During the North American hard court season, Qureshi and Bopanna were able to reach the semi-finals in Los Angeles and Washington and the final in New Haven . They defeated, among others, the world number one Bob and Mike Bryan . At the US Open , the Pakistani-Indian pairing achieved the greatest success of their career to date: After defeating the pairing Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjić, who were seeded in second place in the round of 16 , they marched through to the final, where they took the Bryan brothers lost. In addition to the men's doubles, Qureshi also competed in mixed at this tournament , where he was also able to reach the final alongside Květa Peschke . There they had to admit defeat to the pairing Liezel Huber and Bob Bryan, who were seeded in position 1 . On his subsequent return to Pakistan, Qureshi was honored with a gold medal in Lahore by Punjab's Governor Salmaan Taseer . At the Commonwealth Games 2010 Qureshi competed for Pakistan, but he was eliminated in singles in the second and doubles with Aqeel Khan in the first round. After they were eliminated in the quarter-finals in Shanghai and Moscow , Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Rohan Bopanna were able to reach a final again in Saint Petersburg . However, they lost in two tight sets against Daniele Bracciali and Potito Starace . As a result, they missed qualifying for the ATP World Tour Finals in London in November 2010 as the ninth-best team of the season , but were invited to the event anyway, as they were honored there with the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Of The Year Award . In December 2010, Bopanna and Qureshi were also awarded the Grand Prix of Peace & Sports by Prince Albert in Monaco .

2011

In early 2011, Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Rohan Bopanna reached the round of 16 after participating in the semi-finals at the Sydney ATP tournament at the Australian Open , where they lost in three tight sets. In the spring, the duo was less successful and suffered several first and second round defeats, only at the master's tournament in Indian Wells the two were able to penetrate deeper into the field with a semi-final. Also in the clay court season there were notable successes such as the semifinals at the Monte-Carlo Masters or the quarter-finals in Roland Garros , the duo's best performance so far at the French Open. At the beginning of the grass season, Qureshi celebrated the first title of the season together with Bopanna, in the final in Halle the two Milos defeated Raonic and Robin Haase . The first round at Wimbledon was all the more disappointing , where they lost to Juan Sebastián Cabal and Robert Farah 19:21 in the last set. During the North American hard court season, the success was only moderate, in Montréal and Cincinnati they reached the quarter-finals, at the US Open the two could not repeat the previous year's performance, but made it to the semifinals. Qureshi celebrated his second title of the season in Bangkok , but alongside the Austrian Oliver Marach ; in the final, the two beat the German duo Michael Kohlmann and Alexander Waske . At Bopanna's side, however, he suffered two opening defeats during the Asian tour, but the indoor season in Europe was very successful: in Stockholm the two won their second joint title of the season against Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares . At the tournament in Paris , the duo celebrated their greatest success so far, when they won the championship title for the first time with a final victory over Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut . In addition, Qureshi and Bopanna were able to join the eight best teams for the first time in their careers at the end of the year and thus qualified for the ATP World Tour Finals in London.
