Jasper Smit (born November 17, 1980 in Edam-Volendam ) is a former Dutch tennis player .

Career

Jasper Smit started playing tennis at the age of 7.

singles

Since 2001 he has played tennis professionally. Here he played almost exclusively on the third-rate ITF Future Tour until 2004 . In the individual, he also won his only future title that year and achieved his best career result with 413th place in the world rankings . In the following years it continuously lost places until it was no longer in the top 1000 in 2007. In 2006 he took part in his only qualification for a Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon . In addition, this year he played in the main draw of an ATP World Tour event in Mumbai for the only time . There he lost to Gōichi Motomura in three sets. From 2008 he stopped playing professional-level tournaments and ended his career, but returned in 2010 for a Challenger tournament in Scheveningen . There he surprised, not even leading in the ranking by winning three games in qualifying and then reaching the quarterfinals, where he was defeated by Steve Darcis in three sets. In the last sixteen he defeated the 62nd in the world rankings Pablo Cuevas , who led the seeding list of the tournament.

Double

Smit was more successful in doubles. In addition to 14 futures, he also won three challengers. From 2005 he finished three seasons in a row within the top 200. In a Dutch elimination for a wildcard in doubles for the tournament in Rotterdam , he prevailed in a field of 128 players and thus returned to the World Tour after 10 years. With Jesse Timmermans he was defeated by his compatriots Robin Haase and Matwé Middelkoop in two sets.

Even after his professional career, Smit played in the Dutch tennis league and the German 1st and 2nd Bundesliga tennis for the Gladbacher HTC , with whom he rose in 2013 . He was also five times Dutch champion, most recently in 2011.
