Steve Darcis (born March 13, 1984 in Liège ) is a former Belgian tennis player .

Career

In 2007 Darcis surprisingly won the ATP tournament in Amersfoort against Werner Eschauer . With this he celebrated his first major success on the ATP World Tour . His other successes include reaching the semi-finals of the Challenger tournament in Sanremo in 2007 . In 2008 another tour success followed at the tournament in Memphis . His highest place in the world rankings he reached with the 44th place in May 2008. After he had been trained by Julien Hoferlin for a time, his trainer was first Réginald Willems and is now Juan Francisco Spina .

He celebrated one of his greatest successes on June 24, 2013 in the opening round of the Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament , when he defeated Rafael Nadal , who was fifth in the world rankings at the time and twelve-time Grand Slam winner, in three sets. Shortly afterwards he had to undergo an operation because of a shoulder injury and therefore fell far behind in the world rankings, as he did not play any games between October 2013 and June 2014. In 2020 he ended his career after the Australian Open .

Darcis, who played for the Belgian Davis Cup team from 2005 , led his home country back into a Davis Cup final after 111 years in September 2015 , making it the first final since the International Lawn Tennis Challenge in 1904 . In the final, Belgium lost 3-1 to Great Britain. Darcis played doubles with David Goffin and lost to Andy and Jamie Murray .
