In January 2005 he won the tournament in Milan with a final victory over Radek Štěpánek . In the same year he had to undergo knee surgery. In September he reached the third round of the US Open .
In 2006 he was in the quarterfinals at the tournament in San José , which he lost to Andy Murray in three sets. The following week he reached the final at the Memphis tournament , in which he was defeated by Tommy Haas 3: 6 and 2: 6. He also reached the round of 16 of the Masters tournaments in Monte Carlo , Hamburg , Cincinnati and Madrid and the third round in Indian Wells . In addition, they made it to the round of 16 at the clay court tournament in Munich , the quarter-finals at the lawn tournament in Halle and the semi-finals in Nottingham . In the second half of the year, Söderling was able to advance to the top 30 in the world for the first time through quarter-finals in Båstad and Lyon, the advance to the semi-finals in New Haven and Stockholm and the aforementioned successes at Masters tournaments. He finished the season in 25th place.
At the beginning of 2007 he reached the semi-finals in Doha , Marseille and Dubai . At the Masters in Monte Carlo this time he reached the quarterfinals. In Wimbledon he reached the third round for the second time since 2003, where he was defeated by Rafael Nadal in just five sets. At the Canada Masters in August, he injured himself in the first round, so that the season ended prematurely for him.
In 2008 Söderling was in the final of Rotterdam , Memphis and Stockholm and he won the tournament from Lyon after victories over u. a. Andy Roddick and Gilles Simon .
The 2009 season began with the quarter-finals in Brisbane and a semi-final in Auckland . At the French Open he created a sensation when he defeated the undefeated four-time winner Rafael Nadal in four sets in the round of 16. He reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career . There he defeated Nikolai Dawydenko in three sets and moved into the semifinals, where he defeated Fernando González in five sets. In the final, Söderling was defeated by Roger Federer in three sets. He also lost the next meeting with Federer; at the All England Championships at Wimbledon a few weeks later, Söderling had to return home after his loss of the last 16 against the Swiss.
In July of that year he won his fourth title on the ATP Tour at the Swedish Open in Båstad. He also made it to the double finals with his partner Robert Lindstedt . The year before, he had already triumphed in doubles at the tournament alongside his compatriot Jonas Björkman .
In 2010, Söderling unexpectedly failed in round one at the Australian Open . At the ATP tournament in Rotterdam he then reached the finals with confidence and defeated Mikhail Juschny there - Juschny had to give up in the second set due to physical problems. At the French Open he achieved with victories a. a. defending champion Federer and Tomáš Berdych the final again, but he lost it 4: 6, 2: 6, 4: 6 against Rafael Nadal. Despite the defeat, Söderling climbed to 6th place in the world rankings for the first time in his career. In July 2010 he reached the final at the tournament in his home country, as in the previous year, but this time he was defeated by Nicolás Almagro 5: 7, 6: 3 and 2: 6.
In November he celebrated his greatest success to date when he defeated Gaël Monfils in straight sets in the Paris Masters final. It was his first title in a Masters tournament, and he also achieved a new personal record with fourth place in the world rankings .
The 2011 season began for Söderling with a tournament victory in Brisbane. In the final he was able to defeat the defending champion Andy Roddick. At the Australian Open he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Oleksandr Dolhopolow . In February he won two more titles in Rotterdam and Marseille by winning the final over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Marin Čilić . At the French Open he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against world number one Nadal in three sets. At Wimbledon , he failed in the third round. Shortly thereafter, he secured his tenth title in Båstad with a final win over David Ferrer , his second tournament victory in his home country.
After the tournament in Båstad, Söderling was diagnosed with glandular fever , so he had to take a break for the rest of 2011. Although the symptoms had subsided in the meantime, he was unable to play a tournament in 2012 due to permanent exhaustion, the medical cause of which was puzzling. Since July 2012 he has not been in the world rankings, a possible return remained unclear.
In May 2015, in an interview with the BBC, Söderling expressed the hope that he would be able to “train at 100%” again in 2016 and return to the ATP World Tour. On December 23, 2015, however, Söderling announced in an open letter that he was ending his career because he had not recovered sufficiently from his illness to be active again as a professional player.
