Defending champion in the singles was Roger Federer , who had to admit defeat to second seeding list Rafael Nadal in three sets with 7: 5, 6: 7, 3 and 6: 3 in the final. After the tournament victories in Monte Carlo and Barcelona, that was Nadal's third title in 2008 and the 26th overall. The twin brothers Bob and Mike Bryan were successful in doubles last year. This year they lost to tournament winners Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjić in the final with 4: 6, 7: 5 and [8:10]. That was Nestor's 51st and Zimonjić's 19th title in doubles.
The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 56 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 24 pairs. The eight top seeded players in singles or pairings in doubles each received a bye into the second round. The total prize money was 2,057,000 euros, the total financial liabilities were 2,270,000 euros.
The qualification took place from May 10th to May 11th, 2008. Seven qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament. There were also three lucky losers.
