The 66th International Tennis Championships of Germany took place from June 5 to June 11, 1972 on the Rothenbaum in Hamburg .

The tournament was (for both men and women) part of the Grand Prix Circuit set up by the ILTF , although, unlike last year, there were no parallel Grand Prix tournaments. Because of disputes between the ILTF and the professional organization World Championship Tennis , professional players belonging to the WCT were not allowed to participate. US professional players Gwendy Overton , Linda Tuero and Valerie Ziegenfuss from the Virginia Slim Circuit took part in the women's race.

In her twelfth participation in a row, in which she had continuously improved, Helga Masthoff won the individual title against Linda Tuero. She was also successful in doubles with Heide Orth . Heide Orth and Jürgen Faßbender were able to defend their mixed doubles title, this time in the final against Helga Masthoff and Hans-Jürgen Pohmann . In the men's category , Manuel Orantes won singles and Jan Kodeš and Ilie Năstase doubles.

Prize money

The winners were awarded the following prize money in the competitions: in the men's singles $ 6,250 , in the women 's singles $ 3,000, and in the doubles competitions per pair for the men $ 2,000, in the women $ 1,400 and in the mixed $ 600.
