The 72nd International Tennis Championships in Germany took place from May 15 to May 21, 1978 on the Rothenbaum in Hamburg .

The tournament was part of the Grand Prix Circuit set up by the ITF (for both men and women) .

The defending champions Paolo Bertolucci and Laura duPont were eliminated in the quarterfinals. New title holders were Guillermo Vilas and Mima Jaušovec . Mima Jaušovec won her second title alongside Virginia Ruzici in doubles in the final against Katja Ebbinghaus and Helga Masthoff . The men's doubles were won by Wojtek Fibak and Tom Okker , who had already won doubles in 1969 and singles in 1970 in Hamburg. 18-year-old Sylvia Hanika reached the semi-finals in singles .

It was the last time that the international tennis championships of Germany took place together for women and men at Hamburg's Rothenbaum. From 1979 only the men's tournament was held in Hamburg, while the women's tournament in 1979 and in the following years was held on the grounds of the LTTC Rot-Weiß Berlin at Hundekehlesee. The WTA had pushed for an independent staging of the women's tournament, as this had fallen more and more into the shadow of the men's tournament and should now be more attractive again with a significantly increased prize money of $ 100,000, which therefore no longer had to be raised by the organizers in Hamburg.

Prize money

$ 175,000 were given away for the men and $ 45,000 for the women. The winner in the men's singles received $ 24,000, the winning pairing in the men's doubles $ 9,000.
