The 67th International Tennis Championships of Germany took place from June 11th to June 17th 1973 on the Rothenbaum in Hamburg .
The tournament was part of the Grand Prix Circuit set up by the ILTF (for both men and women) . At the same time, the John Player Open took place in Nottingham as another Grand Prix tournament on grass . For the first time since 1939 there was (almost) a full field of 64 participants again in the men's race.
Of the 64 players who had been selected by trade journalists for the WCT tour before the season started , 16 competed in Hamburg. Of them, however, only the Chilean Jaime Fillol reached the semi-finals. He lost there against Karl Meiler , who was the first German since 1964 in the individual final. At that time Wilhelm Bungert won, who was now 34 years old and played his last tournament in Hamburg. The defending champion Manuel Orantes lost to Harald Elschenbroich in the round of 16 . The new title holder was the US-American Eddie Dibbs , who had won in the semifinals against Jürgen Faßbender . Faßbender won the double finals with Hans-Jürgen Pohmann, which meant there was another German success after 1965. Pohmann also won the mixed doubles alongside South African Pat Pretorius . His mother Inge Pohmann had already won the mixed in 1949, at that time at the side of Engelbert Koch .
In the women's singles and doubles, Helga Masthoff or Masthoff and Heide Orth were able to successfully defend their titles. The 16 year old Martina Navrátilová played for the first time in Hamburg.
The tie-break was now applied when the score was 6: 6, but not in a decisive set.
Prize money
A total of DM 225,000 in prize money was distributed. It is known that the winner in the men's singles received 28,000 DM, the winner in the women's singles 13,500 DM and the winning pairing in the men's doubles DM 11,200.
