The 55th German International Tennis Championships took place from August 7th to 15th, 1961 on the Rothenbaum in Hamburg .

For the first time since Dorothy Head in 1952 , the South African Sandra Reynolds was a triple female winner. She defended her two titles in singles and mixed competitions this time alongside the Australian Bob Hewitt . In doubles, she and her compatriot Renée Schuurman replaced the British Christine Truman , who played for the Wightman Cup in the USA , and Edda Buding , who had also preferred to play in the USA. Bob Hewitt won another doubles title with his compatriot Fred Stolle .

The men's singles title was won by the newly crowned Wimbledon winner Rod Laver , who won the semifinals against Wilhelm Bungert in five sets . Margot Dittmeyer also reached the semi-finals in the women's category. The 19-year-old Helga Niessen took part in Hamburg for the first time .
