Nicola "Nicky" Pietrangeli (born September 11, 1933 in Tunis ) is a former Italian tennis player .

Life

Pietrangeli won the individual title at the French Championships in 1959 and 1960 . He also reached the final there in 1961 and 1964, but lost to the Spaniard Manuel Santana . On grass he achieved his greatest success in 1960 when he reached the semifinals of the Wimbledon Championships .

Pietrangeli is still the most successful player in Italy's Davis Cup history . Between 1954 and 1972 he achieved no less than 120 wins in singles and doubles, and with 66 appearances he is also the record player in his country. In 1960 and 1961 he reached the final in the Davis Cup , but the Italian team had to admit defeat to Australia. As captain, he led Italy to win the Davis Cup in 1976.

In 1986 Nicola Pietrangeli was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame .
