The 63rd International Tennis Championships in Germany took place from August 4 to August 11, 1969 on the Rothenbaum in Hamburg .

The final day was brought forward to Monday, thus shortening the tournament by one day, as audience interest in the finals had waned in previous years. In the men's area, professional players were again signed up and prize money of 66,000 DM was announced. The eight professionals Mal Anderson , Pierre Barthès , Cliff Drysdale , Tom Okker , Nikola Pilić , Marty Riessen , Tony Roche and Roger Taylor , who also played in Hamburg last year , came from the World Championship Tennis . In addition there was the Australian Roy Emerson from the professional group National Tennis League , who had already competed in Hamburg. Of the professionals who started last year, only last year's winner John Newcombe was missing . Tony Roche was his successor. Tom Okker and Marty Riessen defended the doubles title.

Most of the other top players who competed in Hamburg now had the status of licensed players . Only three players who reached a round with prize money had the status of amateurs: Wilhelm Bungert , Christian Kuhnke and the South African Robert Maud . Kuhnke reached the semi-finals in the singles. Jürgen Faßbender reached the final in the men's doubles alongside Frenchman Jean-Claude Barclay .

The successor as the three-time winner of the South African Annette du Plooy , who did not start again, was the Australian Judy Tegart . In the singles she won against Helga Niessen , with whom she won the women's doubles against the meanwhile married Edda Düchting and Helga Hösl . Marty Riessen was her partner in mixed. Helga Hösl also reached the semi-finals in the individual.
