The WTA Hamburg (until 1978: International Tennis Championships of Germany ) was a women's tennis tournament that was held in Hamburg from 1896 to 2002 .
history
The International Tennis Championships were held in Germany for the first time in 1892. In addition to the men's competition, a women's tournament has been held since 1896. In 1979 the International German Championships for women moved to Berlin (see WTA Berlin ). From 1982 to 2002 the Hamburg women's tennis tournament was part of the WTA Tour , after which it was sold to Philadelphia .
On April 30, 1993, Monica Seles was stabbed in the back during her quarter-final match against the Bulgarian Magdalena Maleewa by the mentally disturbed Günter Parche , a German fan of her strongest opponent Steffi Graf , while changing sides.
