The 53rd International Tennis Championships in Germany took place from August 2 to 11, 1959 on the Rothenbaum in Hamburg .

The Briton Billy Knight was successful in the men's singles . In addition, he stood in the double final at the side of the Brazilian Carlos Alberto Fernandes against the Chilean-Australian combination Luis Ayala and Don Candy and won the mixed final at the side of the Mexican Yola Ramirez , who also won the women's doubles together with her compatriot Rosa Reyes against the German-Hungarian combination Edda Buding and Zsuzsa Körmöczy won. They benefited from the injury-related retirement of Zsuzsa Körmöczy. This injury also had an impact on the women's final that Edda Buding won against Zsuzsa Körmöczy without a fight. Edda Buding was the first German female champion since 1948, when Ursula Rosenow won with little international participation. The first time at Rothenbaum were 20-year-old Wilhelm Bungert and 19-year-old Helga Schultze , while Erika Launert , who has now remarried, competed here for the last time and reached the semi-finals in all three competitions.
