The 64th German International Tennis Championships took place from August 10 to August 17, 1970 on the Rothenbaum in Hamburg .

Six years after her victory in the mixed competition, Helga Hösl won the women's final against Helga Niessen this time . The now married three-time defending champion Judy Dalton could only defend her title in mixed, this time at the side of Frew McMillan . The two Australians Karen Krantzcke and Kerry Melville won the women's doubles . For the first time, prize money was also announced in the women's area.

From a German point of view, the men's tournament suffered from the fact that the interzone final in the Davis Cup between Germany and Spain was held at the same time . The organizer had signed six professional players from the World Championship Tennis : Mark Cox , Owen Davidson , Tom Okker , Nikola Pilić , Tony Roche and Graham Stilwell . Okker won the singles final against Ilie Năstase , while Bob Hewitt and Frew McMillan could repeat their 1967 success in the men's doubles .

Due to the commitment of the professionals, the tournament was not included in the men's Grand Prix series set up by the ILTF for the first time this year .

Prize money

The men's singles winner received $ 4,000 and the men's doubles pairing received $ 2,000. In the women’s category, the single winner was earmarked $ 1,500 and the winning pair was earmarked for $ 800.

Remarks

  1. Whether someone was allowed to accept the money from the women placed accordingly must remain open for the time being.
  2. This corresponded exactly to the money paid in the previous year, so that one can perhaps assume that this also applied roughly to the other rounds.
