Sarah Virginia Wade (born July 10, 1945 in Bournemouth , England ) is a former British tennis player . She was the last British woman to win the women's singles title at Wimbledon in 1977 .

Career

Growing up in South Africa , she was considered the greatest talent in British tennis for decades. She won a total of seven Grand Slam titles, three of which were singles. In 1968 she first met the expectations placed in her when she won the US Open . But after losing to Ann Jones at Wimbledon in 1969 , she remained number two in Great Britain .

The culmination of her career was winning the individual title at Wimbledon in 1977 , when she beat Betty Stöve in the final there . In Great Britain, this victory was also very significant due to the 25th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's throne that year. In the same year she was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year , Sportswoman of the Year in the UK.

In 1989, Virginia Wade was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame . Today she is a commentator for the BBC .
