Marty Riessen (born December 4, 1941 in Hinsdale , Chicago ) is a former American tennis player who was active as an amateur and professional.

Career

Riessen began his career as an amateur and was able to win numerous tournaments as such, such as in Cincinnati . With the beginning of the Open Era , Riessen became a professional.

Riessen was mainly active in doubles, where he was able to win a total of 52 titles. He won most of the titles alongside the Dutchman Tom Okker , but he also formed a successful team with his compatriot Sherwood Stewart . With Okker, Riessen moved into a Grand Slam final four times , but they could only win the game at the US Open in 1976 . This was his second Grand Slam title after winning the tournament with Arthur Ashe at the French Open in 1971 . With Stewart he was also still in the finals of the US Open in 1978, but they were subject to Robert Maud and Ken Rosewall . He achieved his best position in the world rankings with third place on March 3, 1980. Riessen was also able to celebrate some successes in the individual: Except at the French Open, he reached the quarter-finals of all Grand Slams. In the course of his career he was able to win a total of six tournaments. On September 4, 1974, he was listed in eleventh place in the world rankings in individual, his best placement.

In mixed doubles, Riessen made nine finals, eight of them with Margaret Smith Court . The duo won six of the eight joint finals, including every Grand Slam tournament. They even completed their mixed career grand slam as a team. With Wendy Turnbull Riessen won his seventh mixed title at the US Open in 1980 .

Between 1963 and 1981 Riessen played eight games for the American Davis Cup team . He won three of four singles and four of six doubles games. Both in his first season and in his last season Riessen won the Davis Cup with the team , even if he was not used in the finals.
