The 50th International Tennis Championships in Germany took place from July 27th to August 5th, 1956 on the Rothenbaum in Hamburg .

This anniversary event was all about the Australians. Lew Hoad , who was victorious in Wimbledon , also won his only appearance in Hamburg and the men's doubles with his compatriot Don Candy . In the women's category, Thelma Long won 18 years after her victory in women's doubles with Nancye Wynne, this time both in singles and in mixed with Chilean Luis Ayala , who was also in the final in men's doubles. In women's doubles, two other Australians were successful with Fay Muller and Daphne Seeney . Erika Vollmer was in both double finals . In the women's singles, Edda Buding reached the semi-finals.
