The 40th German International Tennis Championships took place from July 8th to July 17th, 1938 on the Rothenbaum in Hamburg .

Hilde Sperling won the women's singles title for the fifth time in a row. She was unable to defend her title in women's doubles with Madzy Rollin Couquerque from the Netherlands because she concentrated on singles due to an illness. Here the two Australians Thelma Coyne and Nancye Wynne won , who was also successful in mixed with Frenchman Jean Lesueur . Lesueur in turn won the men's doubles with his compatriot Yvon Petra against Henner Henkel and Georg von Metaxa . As defending champion, Henkel had already been eliminated in the round of 16. The Hungarian Ottó Szigeti won the title .
