Adam Baworowski
Adam Baworowski (born August 9, 1913 in Vienna , † early 1943 in Stalingrad ) was an Austrian - Polish tennis player .
Life
Adam Graf Baworowski came from the traditional Polish noble family Baworowski . From 1933 he appeared as a tennis player. As a member of the Austrian Davis Cup team , he was used from 1933 on the side of Georg von Metaxa in five matches until 1937 and reached the semi-finals of the European zone in 1936. In the same year he won the Austrian championships in Vienna.
At the French championships Baworowski reached the round of 16 in 1937 and 1938. After the " Anschluss " of Austria in March 1938, he decided to join the Polish Davis Cup team because he did not want to lose his parents' estate in Poland. He last took part in the game against the German team in May 1939, which was lost 3-2. At the Wimbledon Championships he had to admit defeat in his three appearances (1933, 1936 and 1939) each in the first round.
After the beginning of the Second World War , Baworowski was initially captured by Germany as a Polish soldier. In 1941 he was German runner-up at the war championships in Braunschweig . He was then drafted into the German Wehrmacht and fell in the Stalingrad pocket in early 1943 .
