It was part of the ATP World Tour 2009 and was played outdoors on a clay court. In the same week the Indianapolis Tennis Championships were held in Indianapolis , which, however, in contrast to the International German Open Hamburg, which belonged to the ATP World Tour 500 category, only belonged to the ATP World Tour 250 category .

Defending champion in the singles was Rafael Nadal , who did not take part in the tournament this year. In this year's final, the second seeding list Nikolai Dawydenko prevailed against the 13 seeded French Paul-Henri Mathieu in two sets with 6: 4, 6: 2. For Dawydenko it was the first title on the ATP Tour this year and his 15th career title. Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjić won the doubles title last year, but they did not compete this year. Simon Aspelin and Paul Hanley won the final in straight sets 6: 3, 6: 3 against Marcelo Melo and Filip Polášek .

The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 48 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 16 pairs. The 16 top seeded players in the singles each got a bye into the second round. The total prize money was 1,000,000 euros; the total financial liabilities were 1,150,000 euros.
