Daniel Fabian Brands (born July 17, 1987 in Deggendorf ) is a former German tennis player . His greatest success was reaching the round of 16 at Wimbledon 2010 .

Career

Daniel Brands played in future tournaments from 2004. In 2006 he won the first time in such a tournament in the Czech Republic.

In April 2007 he received a wild card for the Munich tournament and was able to win his first match at ATP level against Martin Verkerk before he was eliminated by his compatriot Alexander Waske . After reaching two finals at Challenger tournaments in Wolfsburg and Almaty this year , Brands ended 2007 in 216th place in the tennis world rankings .

At the French Open in May 2008, he made it into the main round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time . As a qualifier, he failed in the first round to Dmitri Tursunow in three sets. In July 2008 Brands was able to qualify at the ATP tournament in Kitzbühel and defeated Éric Prodon in the first round before losing to Eduardo Schwank in the second round . Two weeks later he won his first Challenger title in Timișoara by defeating Daniel Muñoz de La Nava .

In May 2009 Daniel Brands got another wildcard in Munich and was able to advance to the semi-finals after winning over Stefan Koubek , Julien Benneteau and Potito Starace , where he lost to Michail Juschny . Then he was able to qualify for the French Open like last year , but lost again in the first round in an almost four-hour five-sentence thriller to Robert Kendrick . In July 2009 Brands started with a wildcard at the German Open in Hamburg and was able to defeat top 10 player Gilles Simon in the second round , before he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Paul-Henri Mathieu . After taking revenge against Robert Kendrick in the first round in Vienna in October 2009 , Brands won his second Challenger title against Dustin Brown in Eckental in November 2009, making it into the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time at the end of the year.

As a result, he was directly qualified for the Australian Open in January 2010 , but lost there in the first round against Yevgeny Korolev . In April 2010 Daniel Brands was able to win his third Challenger title in Monza with a victory over Pablo Andújar , and also reached the final in Tunis . In May 2010 he started at the French Open , where he met Jo-Wilfried Tsonga , who was 8th, in the first round . After almost four hours, Brands lost in a close match against the local hero. A month later Brands celebrated his greatest success so far at Wimbledon : After victories over Igor Andrejew , Nikolai Dawydenko and Victor Hănescu , he made it to the round of 16, where he was defeated by future finalist Tomáš Berdych in four sets . As a result, he achieved his best position to date in the world rankings with rank 66. At the US Open in August 2010, Brands lost to Benjamin Becker in the first round in three tight sets. Only a month later, after victories over Ilja Martschenko and Thiemo de Bakker, the two Germans met again in the quarter-finals of the Thailand Open 2010 in Bangkok , and Becker again retained the upper hand. In the last tournaments of the year Brands could not win a main round match and fell out of the top 100 in the world rankings by the end of the year.

He was still qualified for the Australian Open 2011 , but retired, as in the previous year, in the first round against Serhij Stachowskyj . A week later he reached the final at the Challenger tournament in Heilbronn , where he lost to Bastian Knittel in two tight sets . At the following ATP tournament in Zagreb , Brands prevailed in the first round in an extremely close three-set match against Ivo Karlović , but then had no chance against Ivan Ljubičić , who was in second place . Since then he had only won one game in a qualification. At the French Open , like in 2010, he was eliminated in the first round. Since he was eliminated in the first qualifying round at Wimbledon and thus could not defend his round of 16 from last year, Brands slipped to 220th place in the world rankings. In July, however, he won his fourth Challenger title in Oberstaufen , followed by the fifth in Helsinki in November . This enabled him to finish 2011 at position 110 in the world rankings.

2012 was a mixed year for Brands. At the Australian Open , French Open and Wimbledon , he was eliminated in qualifying. At the US Open , he made the jump into the main field and was able to win his opening match against Adrian Ungur . In the second round, however, he had to admit defeat Marin Čilić in five sets. On the ATP Tour he achieved his best result with the quarter-finals in Bucharest . By winning the tournament in Eckental , he won his sixth tournament win on the ATP Challenger Tour.

Right at the beginning of 2013 he was able to celebrate a success by making it to the semi-finals in Doha . At the BMW Open 2013 he lost in the semifinals to Philipp Kohlschreiber . In August 2013 he reached 51st place in the world rankings, his highest ranking so far.

2014 started off well for Daniel Brands. At the tournament in Doha he was in the quarterfinals after victories over Nikolai Dawydenko and number two seeded David Ferrer . There he had no chance against the Frenchman Gaël Monfils and lost with 2: 6 and 1: 6. In the following tournaments he was eliminated a total of seven times in the opening round before he was diagnosed with glandular fever at the end of March . After a two-month break, he returned to a tournament at the French Open . Starting the season at number 57 in the world, Brands fell back to 329th place by the end of the year. It wasn't until September 2015 that he made it back into the top 200. In 2016 and 2017, he won only three of a total of eight games on the World Tour across all seasons and again fell far behind in the world rankings.

In July 2018, he achieved a title win for the first time in six years by winning the challenger tournament in Recanati . After his defeat in qualifying for the Wimbledon Championships 2019 , he ended his professional career.

Davis Cup

In 2013 Daniel Brands made his debut for the German Davis Cup team . In the relegation game against Brazil he was used in doubles and in the third singles. With his 3-0 victory in the individual against Thomaz Bellucci and the decisive 3-1 for Germany, he secured the class prematurely.
