Ivan Dodig (born January 2, 1985 in Međugorje , then SR Bosnia-Herzegovina , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Bosnian - Croatian tennis player .

life and career

Until 2006: Career and first experiences in the Davis Cup and at future tournaments

Ivan Dodig started playing tennis at the age of eight. Since 2000 he played tournaments on the junior tour and won a tournament there in September 2002. In April 2002 Dodig played for the first time for the Davis Cup team of Bosnia and Herzegovina in doubles, but lost both games there. By 2006 he played a total of 22 matches in singles and doubles for Bosnia-Herzegovina, of which he was able to win seven.

Since 2002 Ivan Dodig tried to qualify for satellite and future tournaments in the adult area. After reaching the quarter-finals in a future tournament in September 2003, he was listed for the first time in the world .

It was not until August 2005 that he reached a future final in Croatia for the first time. In June 2006 he won his first future title in Bosnia and Herzegovina and reached another final two weeks later. After winning a future tournament in Nigeria for the second time in October 2006, he entered the top 500 in the world rankings.

2007–2008: Successes on the Challenger Tour, Croatian citizenship and ATP debut

After he had reached another future final in May 2007, he tried from now on to gain a foothold on the ATP Challenger Tour . He also played several qualifications for ATP tournaments , but initially without success. In the further course of the year he reached one Challenger semi-finals and four quarter-finals and was now ranked 256th in the world. In doubles he was even able to win two Challenger tournaments.

In February 2008 Ivan Dodig took on Croatian citizenship because, as a Bosnian number 1 player, he received too little support from his association. In February 2008, Dodig was able to qualify for an ATP tournament for the first time by defeating Andrei Golubew in Marseille , but had no chance there in the first round against world number three Novak Đoković . The rest of the year passed without any major highlights; Dodig reached the quarterfinals of a Challenger tournament only once, and he also won a Future title in singles and a Challenger title in doubles.

2009: First Challenger title and ATP match wins

The year 2009 began with a successful qualification for the ATP tournament in Zagreb , where Dodig reached the quarter-finals after beating the top 50 players Igor Andrejew and Ernests Gulbis . There he lost to his compatriot Mario Ančić . In March 2009 Ivan Dodig won his first individual title in a Challenger tournament in Sarajevo after defeating Dominik Meffert . A month later he reached another Challenger final in Ostrava , which he lost to Jan Hájek . This year he tried for the first time to qualify for Grand Slam tournaments, but without success. He received a wild card for the Umag ATP tournament , but then lost to Pablo Cuevas in the first round . In October 2009 there was a scandal at the Challenger tournament in Kolding : Dodig reached the final and had already won the first set against Alex Bogdanovic . In the tie-break of the second set there was a contentious decision and Dodig lost the set. He is said to have insulted a line judge and was therefore disqualified. Out of anger, he then smashed the trophy. On his homepage he protested his innocence and apologized for the destroyed trophy. At the end of the year, Ivan Dodig was ranked 180th in the world.

2010: Grand Slam debut and entry into the Top 100

In January 2010, Dodig qualified for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the Australian Open . In the first lap he met Juan Carlos Ferrero, who was 23rd . When he was already 2-0 down in sets, he turned the game around and defeated the former world number one. In the second round, however, he lost to Stefan Koubek . Dodig also reached the second round at the ATP tournament in Zagreb , for which he received a wildcard. In March he played for his new home Croatia in the Davis Cup for the first time. After losing the final of the Challenger tournament in Ostrava in April 2010, as in the previous year , Ivan Dodig was able to qualify for the main draw in Wimbledon in July 2010 . After a first round win over Óscar Hernández , he lost to Sam Querrey in the second round . After a second round at the ATP tournament in Umag , Dodig was able to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament at the US Open 2010 for the third time this year. And as in the two other tournaments, he reached the second round. He benefited from the abandonment of his opponent Fernando González , who had to abandon the match in a 1-1 set tie because of a knee injury. In the second round against Thiemo de Bakker , however, Dodig had to give up himself when he was 1: 2 sets back. In October 2010 Ivan Dodig reached an ATP quarter-finals for the second time in his career as a qualifier after victories over Tommy Robredo and Tobias Kamke in Stockholm . There he was able to win the first set against his fellow countryman Ivan Ljubičić , who was placed in 4th position , but lost the match in three sets. Nevertheless, he achieved his best world ranking to date with 118th place. Just two weeks later, Dodig reached a Challenger final for the second time this year in Astana after defeating Rainer Schüttler . There he won the second Challenger title in his career against Igor Kunizyn and then moved into the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time.

2011: First ATP title and establishment as a top 50 player

At the beginning of 2011, Ivan Dodig retired from the ATP tournament in Chennai in the second round against Tomáš Berdych, who was number 1 . In doubles he could only be stopped at the side of Marin Čilić in the semifinals by the eventual tournament winners Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes . At the Australian Open , Dodig met his compatriot Ivo Karlović in the first round . Although he hit a total of 48 aces in the course of the match, Dodig was able to prevail in five sets. His next opponent was the third placed Novak Đoković . Dodig could keep up well for two sets, but ultimately lost in four sets against the eventual winner of the tournament. He was the only player in the entire tournament who could take a set from Đoković. At the following ATP tournament in Zagreb in early February 2011, Dodig reached an ATP final for the first time after victories over the top 50 players Marcel Granollers , Ivan Ljubičić and Guillermo García-López . There he prevailed against Michael Berrer in two sets and won his first title. In the world rankings, he then jumped to 60th place, his best ranking so far. Ivan Dodig achieved the next big success in April 2011 at the ATP clay court tournament in Barcelona , where he reached the semifinals by beating top 10 player Robin Söderling, among other things . There he had no chance against world number one and later tournament winner Rafael Nadal . After he was eliminated in the first round against Pere Riba in his French Open debut , Ivan Dodig was able to enter for the second time at the lawn tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch in June 2011, among other things by defeating Marcos Baghdatis, who was in second place his career to reach an ATP final, which he lost in two sets against Dmitri Tursunov . In Wimbledon as well as in Hamburg and at the home tournament in Umag , however, there were again first round defeats against significantly lower placed opponents. In August 2011, Ivan Dodig caused a surprise at the Masters tournament in Montreal when he knocked Rafael Nadal out of the competition in the second round. Nadal had clearly won the first set and led with a break in both the second and third set, but Dodig did not give up and fought his way to victory over the favorites after more than three hours of play. After that, however, he was defeated by the later semi-finalist Janko Tipsarević . He finished the year in 36th place in the world rankings.

2012–2013: first successes in doubles

The 2012 season was without a title win for Dodig, but he reached his first two double finals on the World Tour in Zagreb with Mate Pavić and Memphis with Marcelo Melo . In the world rankings, he temporarily dropped out of the top 100 singles, but ended the year in 72nd place. In the following year, he set a new personal record at the Australian Open and the US Open by entering the third round and at Wimbledon by entering the round of 16. At the same time he reached his career high in the individual world rankings on October 7th, 2013 with rank 29. With Marcelo Melo he won his first double title at the Masters in Shanghai and also reached the Wimbledon final with Melo . There they defeated Bob and Mike Bryan in four sentences. In November, he climbed to sixth place in the double ranking.

Since 2014: Grand Slam successes in doubles

As a result, Dodig concentrated more and more on doubles, even though he also took part in numerous tournaments in singles. On the Challenger Tour he won three other titles in 2015. Until October 2016, with an interruption of several weeks, it stayed in the top 100 of the individual world rankings, but then fell far behind within two years and completely out of the individual world rankings on July 23, 2018. In doubles, Dodig reached four finals with Marcelo Melo in the 2014 season , including the Masters in Monte-Carlo and Toronto and the World Tour Finals . In Monte-Carlo and at the finals, Dodig and Melo again lost to the Bryan brothers. In 2015 , the two lost to the Bryans in the Washington, DC final , but won the Acapulco tournament and the Paris Masters . Their greatest mutual success came at the French Open , where they finally defeated Bob and Mike Bryan in three sets. He then reached his career high on June 8, 2015 with fourth place in the double world rankings.

In the 2016 season , Dodig and Melo made three finals on the World Tour. They lost the final in Nottingham , while they won the title at the Masters tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati . After the season, Dodig and Melo separated, after which Dodig continued to play with different partners from 2017 . In 2017 he played most of the tournaments alongside Marcel Granollers , with whom he won the tournaments in Rotterdam and Basel and reached the Masters finals in Rome and Paris . With Mate Pavić he secured the title win in Hamburg , with Rohan Bopanna he moved into the Masters final in Montreal . In the following three seasons, there were three more final defeats on the World Tour: in 2018 he lost the final with Rajeev Ram in Geneva , with Filip Polášek he was in the final of Antalya in 2019 and in Adelaide in 2020 . The three defeats in the final are compared to a total of five title wins: Dodig won with Ram in 2018 in Munich and was again successful with Mate Pavić in Chengdu in the same year . In 2019 Dodig won tournaments with Édouard Roger-Vasselin in Montpellier and Lyon , and the following year he won the Masters in Cincinnati with Filip Polášek . In Grand Slam tournaments, he reached the semi-finals in men's doubles at Wimbledon in 2019 and at the Australian Open in 2020 . In mixed, Dodig and Latisha Chan were three-time Grand Slam winners. In 2018 and 2019 they won the title at the French Open and in 2019 at Wimbledon .
