Frederico Gil (born March 24, 1985 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese tennis player .

life and career

After Gil "ended" his junior career by reaching the quarter-finals of the Orange Bowl , he mainly played future tournaments between 2003 and 2007. The first successes came in 2005 with wins in Faro , Lagos and Caracas . The next year he played after two other future titles also challenger tournaments and was able to win a tournament of this category in Sassuolo . At the end of the year Gil was among the best 200 tennis players in the world rankings (155) and thus the best Portuguese. In 2007 he made his first qualification for an ATP tournament (in Casablanca ) A week later he survived the first round in his home country in Estoril against the then top 100 player Rubén Ramírez Hidalgo , but was eliminated by Richard Gasquet . At the end of the year he was still able to win the Challenger tournament in Seville win.

In 2008 he made it to an ATP quarter-finals in Estoril and was also able to win two challenger tournaments. These successes brought him into the top 100 in the short term. He was the first Portuguese since Nuno Marques in 1995 to do that.

2009 was Gils' most successful year so far. At the start of the season he made it to the semi-finals in Johannesburg and Costa do Sauípe . After a few more successes, it was 66th in the world again, the highest ranking that a Portuguese has ever achieved since the ATP world rankings were introduced in 1973. But Gil could not keep his form and even fell out of the top 100 again for a short time, only the success at the Challenger in Naples brought him back on the road to success.

The year 2010 started with three opening defeats, the latter against David Ferrer at the Australian Open he had to give up when the score was 0: 6, 0: 6, 0: 2. After further first round defeats, he fell back in the ATP rankings. Only after reaching the finals at the home tournament in Estoril was Gil able to count himself back to the top 100 tennis players in the world. It was the first Portuguese finals in the history of sport. The rest of the year was rather disappointing , with the exception of the tournament victory at the Challenger in Milan and the second round in the double competition at the US Open , and Gil finished the year in 102nd place.
