Carlos Alberto Berlocq (born February 3, 1983 in Chascomús , Buenos Aires Province ) is an Argentine tennis player .

life and career

Until 2004: First successes in future tournaments

Carlos Berlocq started playing tennis at the age of four. Since 2000 he has played at future tournaments in South America and was soon able to win his first matches there. In 2001 he reached his first final in Bolivia.

In June 2002 Berlocq had a series of successes: within a month he won 18 out of 19 matches and a total of three future tournaments in Mexico and Chile. As a result, he rose to the top 400 in the tennis world rankings and was now able to play in tournaments on the ATP Challenger Tour .

Since he was unable to assert himself here, however, he played futures tournaments again in the second half of 2003, and here again had an enormous success rate: in six tournaments in a row he always reached at least the semi-finals and was able to win three tournaments. In 2004 he reached six future finals in a row, of which he won three. In August 2004 he was then able to reach a Challenger final in Manta for the first time, which he lost to Giovanni Lapentti .

2005–2006: Challenger title, entry into the Top 100 and Grand Slam debut

Barely a year later in May 2005, Carlos Berlocq won his first Challenger title in Turin . Since he was now in the top 200 of the world rankings, he now only played Challenger tournaments and also tried to qualify for ATP tournaments . He succeeded for the first time in July 2005 in Stuttgart , but lost in the first round against Răzvan Sabau . In the further course of the year Berlocq was able to win two more Challenger titles in Cordenons and Buenos Aires and thus achieved a place in the top 100 for the first time in November 2005.

Thanks to his placement, Carlos Berlocq was directly qualified for the Australian Open in January 2006 ; However, he lost in four tight sets against Björn Phau . In the following months he played several ATP tournaments, but he was only able to reach the second round in three of thirteen tournaments. His first victory at ATP level was remarkable: At the Masters tournament in Miami , he defeated the American hopeful Donald Young 6-0, 6-0. However , he then lost the second round match against James Blake with 0: 6, 0: 6. His two debut appearances at the French Open and Wimbledon also ended with smooth first-round defeats. Reaching the second round in Umag in July 2006 was Berlocq's last ATP match for the time being, as he had fallen out of the top 100 in the ranking and therefore had to play Challenger tournaments again. After a final defeat in Belém in September 2006, Carlos Berlocq celebrated his fourth Challenger title in November 2006 in Naples .

2007–2009: First ATP semifinals, injury break and comeback

At the beginning of 2007 Berlocq was able to reach an ATP quarter-finals for the first time in Viña del Mar. He defeated the former French Open winner Gastón Gaudio for the first time a player from the top 50 of the world rankings. Berlocq himself got back into the Top 100 after a Challenger title in Barletta and was thus directly qualified for the 2007 French Open . There he was able to win his first Grand Slam match against Julien Benneteau, who was in 30th position , but was eliminated in the second round against Potito Starace . In doubles, he was even able to reach the round of 16 alongside Pablo Cuevas . At the ATP tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch he defeated the former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero . After his second Challenger title in Turin , he was able to reach an ATP quarter-finals for the second time in Umag in July 2007 . At the US Open 2007 Berlocq was eliminated in the first round against Radek Štěpánek , but two weeks later he reached the semi-finals of an ATP tournament for the first time in Bucharest . He was able to win the first set against the eventual tournament winner Gilles Simon , but was then clearly defeated in three sets. In the following weeks, Berlocq achieved its best position in the world rankings to date with rank 66.

In 2008, Carlos Berlocq could not build on the successes of the previous year: After reaching the quarter-finals in Viña del Mar in February as in the previous year, he was only able to win one more ATP individual match. In July 2008, he reached an ATP final for the first time in doubles alongside Fabio Fognini in Umag . From August 2008 to August 2009 Berlocq only played three tournaments due to an injury to his right wrist and therefore fell in the world rankings to 730th place. He made his "comeback" at Challenger tournaments in Italy and was able to do his fourth tournament in Geneva reach a final again. By the end of the year he was back at number 255 in the world rankings.

2010–2011: ATP double title, further Challenger single titles and re-entry into the top 100

In February 2010 Berlocq qualified at the ATP tournament in Costa do Sauípe for the main field and reached the quarter-finals there. After a Challenger final in Alessandria in May 2010 , Berlocq celebrated his first Challenger title in almost three years in Reggio nell'Emilia in June 2010 . Only two weeks later the next title followed in San Benedetto , and with it the return to the top 100 of the world rankings. In July 2010, Berlocq was also able to win his first ATP title in doubles alongside his compatriot Eduardo Schwank in Stuttgart . At the US Open , Berlocq played for the first time in over two years in a Grand Slam tournament, but he was eliminated in the first round against Victor Hănescu . Two weeks later he was able to win his third Challenger title of the season in Todi . At the South American clay court challenger tournaments in October and November 2010, Carlos Berlocq won a total of three double titles together with Brian Dabul . In the individual, he reached at least the semi-finals six times in a row, but could not win a title. At the end of the year, Berlocq equalized its best marks from 2007 in the world rankings with 66th place in singles and 80th place in doubles.

The year 2011 began for Carlos Berlocq at the Australian Open with a first round loss to Robin Haase . In doubles he was eliminated together with Pere Riba in the second round against the eventual winners Bob and Mike Bryan . In March 2011 Berlocq was able to defeat the 28th-placed Ernests Gulbis in three sets at the Masters tournament in Miami in the second round before he had to admit defeat to the top 10 player Tomáš Berdych in two tight sets. After being eliminated in the second round of the ATP tournaments in Barcelona , Estoril and Nice in April and May 2011 , Carlos Berlocq was also able to reach the second round of the French Open by defeating Bernard Tomic . There he lost to the qualifier Łukasz Kubot . At the grass tournament in Eastbourne , Berlocq surprisingly defeated Oleksandr Dolhopolow , who was in second place , but then lost in a close match against Olivier Rochus . At Wimbledon he failed for the fourth time in the first round when he lost in five sets to qualifier Karol Beck . But a week later he was able to win his first Challenger title in Turin by defeating Albert Ramos , which was now his third title in Turin. In early September 2011, Carlos Berlocq reached the second round at the US Open by defeating Pere Riba for the first time, where he met world number one Novak Đoković . Against this he was only able to win his first game after more than an hour of play and thus barely prevented a “triple bagel” when he ultimately lost 6-0, 6-0, 6-2 against the eventual winner. Back on the European clay court, Berlocq won two more Challenger titles in Todi and Palermo in the following weeks . At the following indoor hard court tournaments in Moscow and Saint Petersburg Berlocq was eliminated in the first round in each individual. In doubles, however, he surprisingly reached the final in Moscow together with David Marrero . At the end of the season, Carlos Berlocq then won the Challenger titles number 4 and 5 this year in his home city of Buenos Aires and in Montevideo . He is one of six players who have won 14 or more Challenger singles titles in their career.

2012: First ATP individual final and entry into the top 50

In early 2012, Carlos Berlocq was able to reach the second round of the Australian Open for the first time by defeating qualifier Jesse Huta Galung , where he was eliminated by Ivo Karlović . At the following clay court tournament in Viña del Mar , Berlocq reached the final of an ATP tournament for the first time with a three-set victory over his compatriot Juan Ignacio Chela , who was placed in second position . There he met with Juan Mónaco on another Argentine, against whom he lost in three sets. Nevertheless, due to this success, he moved into the top 50 of the world rankings for the first time in his career. In the same week, he also also reached the final of the doubles competition, where he but together with Pablo Andújar almost Frederico Gil and Daniel Gimeno-Traver was beaten. At the following tournaments in São Paulo , Buenos Aires and Acapulco Berlocq reached the quarterfinals. He twice defeated the top 20 player Gilles Simon and also achieved a curious result in the first round of Buenos Aires against Pere Riba: After losing the first set in the tie-break, Berlocq won the next two sets 6-0.

Davis Cup

In 2012 , Carlos Berlocq was appointed to the Argentine Davis Cup team for the first time when Argentina met the Czech Republic in the semi-finals .
