Martín Miguel Vassallo Argüello (born February 10, 1980 in Temperley , Gran Buenos Aires ) is a retired Argentine tennis player .

Career

Vassallo Argüello started playing tennis and football at the age of nine. When he was 13 he decided to play tennis.

The Argentine won 17 of his 18 Challenger tournaments on clay, his favorite surface, 8 of which were in the individual competition. Vassallo Argüello won his only title on the ATP Tour in a doubles in Acapulco alongside the Italian Potito Starace . In the final, he and his partner beat the Czech duo Lukáš Dlouhý and Pavel Vízner 6-0 and 6-2.

In April 1998 the Argentine played his first Future tournament in his home country. Until 2001 he played exclusively youth tournaments before he completed his first tournament in August 2001 as part of the ATP Challenger Tour in Brazil . In April 2002 he finally won his first tournament in this category. In Rome he clearly beat the Italian Filippo Volandri on clay in two sets.

Vassallo Argüello played his first Grand Slam tournament in 2002 at the French Open in Paris. In the first round he was eliminated from the American Todd Martin . In May 2006 he achieved his greatest single success when he advanced to the second round of the French Open . Here he lost to his compatriot David Nalbandian in three sets. Vassallo Argüello achieved his best placement with 47th place in April 2009, after he had won three Challengers in 2008 and at the beginning of the year reached a semifinal on the ATP World Tour for the only time in Acapulco and was eliminated from Nicolás Almagro . Shortly thereafter, he also came to his only use in the Argentine Davis Cup team , where he was able to book a victory in singles and doubles. After that, he never got past the second round on the World Tour and ended his career in 2011.
